A solo exhibition of Painting: UTSAV celebrating Festivals

Celebrating Festivals

Nepal is an enigmatic multidimensional country, with magical and unfathomable diversity of cultures and religions. We have serene temples, innumerable festivals, and myriad celebrations where emotions flourish and social exchange is abound. As a country divided into Himal, Pahad and Terai, Nepal celebrates the same occasion in different ways depending on the region. Our multi-dimensional culture historically evolved around the geographical variations within the country’s borders and remained intact due to long years of political isolation. I have tried to portray the spirit and ethos behind and around the ‘UTSAVS’ or celebrations observed in Nepal – in particular the festivals in Kathmandu valley which are famous for its pomp and ceremony . UTSAV is about enjoyment, leaving behind negativity to move towards a blissful new life with vigor and enthusiasm. I have tried to portray glimpses of these celebrations through my art.

The aesthetical sensibilities and creative impulses of people have always fascinated me. I believe that festivals arise from of an inspired collective consciousness that seeks to bring communities together to celebrate around diverse thematic cultural representations. I find the energetic and expressive body language of people amidst festivities visually exciting.  In particular, the festival of Inadrajatra has always been special to me. The act of pulling a chariot with the living goddess “Kumari” onboard, worshipping deities, their avatars, mask dances and traditional music all combine to create a transcendental experience. Even just the colors that are paraded on festive occasion suffice to become a performance.  It is this tangential aura and exuberance that attracted my attention to the subject-matter.

Similarly, Dashain, one of the biggest and the longest festivals of all Nepalis, symbolizes a cultural cohesion. It is customary during Dashain to seek blessing from the elders, to come together as family and friends. I have portrayed these ideas through the use of the color red.

I have been inspired by motifs that are connected with traditional Mandap-mandalas that are made during Mha Puja, a ceremony marked by the purification of the body and soul and by Bhai Tika – the last day of Tihar, when brothers are worshipped and pampered by their sisters. The Mandalas connected with the Swastika and Sadkona are brought together emphasizing the amalgamation of varying forms, colors and medium.

Similarly, the festival of Machhendranath, the longest chariot-pulling festival in Kathmandu has exerted its influence on my work as well.  The multicolored banners that are hung on bamboo poles at the beginning of Holi inspire me as well.

The eagerness of the people awaiting the fete and achieving what they are expecting through it seems to be as an enthusiastic supremacy. The importance of festival will never fade away and will have its significance till the country and the people celebrating it remains. I am sure that the aesthetical amalgamation of the cultural festivals and human emotions will remain forever.

Work in Progress for Kathmandu International Art Festival

Now I am working for Kathmandu International Art Festival (KIAF)

The Beginning and the End of the life:

Earth : Body : Mind

The concept:

The expression will be from paintings using the thoughts from the title (Earth: Body: Mind) and along with the painting the natural elements will be supporting the paintings.

The painting will be in a compiled from. Three paintings will depict the approach of Earth, Body and Mind. The thoughts will be produced by the linear quality and the color concept.

1.      Earth:

Earth is the source which acts as a platform and contains the varied forms and thoughts. It is one of the important source of any living beings and  core of the creative journey.

2.      Body:

Body in the philosophical thoughts is the voyage and the physical activity of the creation. The communication and the visual interpretation is paved by the creative vibes of the journey that any personality contains. These all activity will be generated on one of the three painting.
3.      Mind:

Another important factor is our mind from which controls our body and the attitude towards the earth. Different psyches of the living forms have different attitude and mental status. As art cannot be defined, the mind fluctuates and its definition is different within different personality.

These three seems to be different, but they are interrelated to each other. That is what I feel and what I want to express.  Different approach of different elements  is very vast to capture but with the creative acknowledge I am just trying to depict the silent emotional attitude.

As the thematic concept of the title is conceived the whole universe and the belief of the Earth : Body : Mind  should be perceived.

As from my view the title indicates the beginning and the end of the voyage of the living and non-living forms. From the beginning of the life till the end of our life we are occupied by various culture aspects of the life which acts itself as the art and its supportive thoughts. From the birth of human forms the cultural concept starts which look like the art in itself and till the end of the life the human aspects glows towards various journey of the creative and cultural process.

So, why not utilizing those facts to be included at my painterly thoughts which can be supported by the natural elements. Since we are living at the contemporary habits we are naturally lacking our views and deep thoughts towards our natural formation which helps to build up any creative perception. The global concern towards the natural destruction is growing and as an artist I think that the work of with the natural elements will be a greater awareness about the importance of the natural balance.

The painting supportive with the elements…….

The concept will not only be approached by the paintings but will be developed within the peripheral atmosphere with the natural elements. The culmination of different rocks and red clay will be presented along with the sand as the supportive means. The traditional aspect along with the global warming will be the visual language of my creativity.

Depicting with the simple concept will be much more approachable for the entire viewer to know about the thematic sense and general awareness.

‘TATVA the expression with elements’

10th Solo painting Exhibiton At Nepal Art Council 27th January 2012 – 2nd February 2012

TATVA the expression with elements

Reflections of nature vividly conquer my works in this series where ‘TATVA’ is my main motif. Naturally, in the process of evolution, construction  of all living beings and non-living things is related with the elements. Assimilation of tatvas in this world prolifically defines the genesis of new creation with their own description and interpretation.

According to Indian Mythology ‘Panchatatva’ represents five elements from which life evolves. All the contents in this universe and universe itself is basically composed of Panchatatva or five basic elements comprising of Prithvi(earth), Apas(water),Tejas(light), Maruta(wind) and Aakaash (sky). According to Chinese astrology, our universe consists of five basic elements namely metal, water, wood, fire and earth.

Besides universal interpretation of element, my creations and ideas executed in my paintings are another element or  ‘Tatva’ for me. Life is there which begins and ends with the passionate concept of the creative works. I have depicted the schematic theme of the importance of elements in my exposition this time. Here, the linear formation depicts various characters of the elements, colors modulate the pattern of elements and thoughts revolve around the theme ‘Tatva’.

I delve deep into the search of new elements in my works. For me, painting or enjoying with the artistic notion is an eternal part of my life and it is one of the basic elements of my existence. Like earth, my works are my platform, it has different ambiguous feel like air, the touch of warmth like fire, the infinite perception like the sky and the flexible consistency like water. In addition to these formations, the whole body of the creative journey begins with an unknown voyage of the expressive language of art which is another important element of my life.

Creative patterns have varied syntheses and different meanings along with the perception and views of various personalities. The language of my paintings may be abstract but can be observed and is within the reach of our own inner thoughts.

Sagar Manandhar

Series of paintings entitled Grahan- an eclipe (2011)

These paintings were exhibited at Park Art Gallery, Pulchowk, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Grahan– an eclipse

One of the most powerful phenomena of the nature can be evaluated through the phase eclipse. The genre of the nature to show its mysterious vision and the aesthetical sensation proved to be the major attraction for me to work on this series.

The fertile environment that has been carved and the excitement on the human emotional aspects are the major source of my paintings. Anxious moments for the human thoughts to glance at the eclipse are as important as my deep acknowledgment to look forward my own paintings. I am equally determined and delve to find out how my paintings are gradually created. The vibes of the powerful essence, the spectrum of colors through the darkness and the glory of the silence on the nature just provoked me to go on for creative motifs. Newly formed pictorial language and the spatial vision fully control my emotive evaluation.

It doesn’t matter what the formal interpretation of the eclipse have; for me it provides the inner energy freely to capture the ambiguous dimension. I define   eclipse not as darkness. It is the beginning for new hopes, new rays to emerge; triumph of the new perception in the entire universe.

Paintings from the series of Voyage (2010)

an endless journey…….

I try to delve deep into the imaginative thoughts in the process of creativity. The experiences of my journey to various different places add a symphony to my paintings. Synchronization of colors, textural values, and linear continuation is all the inspirational factors that grew from the voyage. The landscapes vibrate my thoughts to manipulate into my own pictorial language of painterly approach. Subtle variation of the natural phenomena and the ambiguous quality of nature attracts my inner soul. Long six years of educational session in Varanasi made me think of how different is the life of Kathmandu and I got a chance to compare the two cities, which is the additional source to my paintings. Different festivals, multicolored cultural rituals, sounds, the architonic structure are all part of my creation. The paintings are more than a schematic process but lead me towards the intuition, which made me think of the new happenings and process. The voyage made through the paintings and analyzing them gives me the chance to perceive beyond the world of reality to the aesthetical values of my own world of creativity. The journey of creation is endless in process for a nouveau search where triumph lies far beyond; still the search is in progress with the new creations.
